Edward Bawden At Home
We've had the pleasure of working with Edward Bawden's family for some time now, reissuing four of his iconic wallpapers.
Edward Bawden CBE RA (1903-1989) was a British painter, illustrator and graphic artist – training under Paul Nash in the 1920s. His first one-man show was in 1933. With a well-established reputation as a designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter, he also designed posters and ceramics, blurring the boundary between fine and applied arts.
In 2018, we published Edward Bawden At Home: A Working Life, a richly illustrated hardback book which includes a series of photographs of the Bawden's Saffron Walden home, taken shortly after the artist's death in 1989 by photographer Roy Hammans, alongside a selection of prints, watercolours and posters.
You can register your interest in a third edition of the book, but in the meantime, here's a more extensive selection of the images taken by Roy Hammans.
“In 1989, I was fortunate to be asked to record the interior of the artist Edward Bawden’s house in Saffron Walden, Essex, shortly after his death, by Olive Cook, a close friend of Bawden.
I spent the best part of a sunny December day there, lighting and recording an interior which featured much of his work and that of his late wife, the potter Charlotte Epton, as well as prints and artefacts by many other famous artists.”
“‘Edward Bawden At Home: A Working Life’ is an intimate and beautifully designed book from Simon and Angie Lewin’s Random Spectacular imprint. For anyone interested in his world, this beautiful little book is a fascinating glimpse into his home life.”
