Mark Hearld on Material Matters

Our good friend and collaborator Mark Hearld recently spoke to Grant Gibson on the Material Matters podcast. It’s a fascinating insight into Mark’s creative world.

You can enjoy the podcast below, but you can also listen over at Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Mark for many years and look forward to sharing news of his next creations for St Jude’s.

In the meantime, you’ll find a selection of Mark’s designs in our current fabric sale and winter wallpaper sale.

Mark Hearld’s Harvest Hare

Mark Hearld’s ever-popular Harvest Hare design - a past winner of an Elle Decoration British Design Award - is currently available in a range of fabric and wallpaper colourways.

Mark cut the original design for Harvest Hare as a lino block. This was then used to create both our screen printed fabric and the traditionally printed wallpaper.

The colour of a ripening cornfield and the structural, repeating quality of ears of corn were the starting points for my first wallpaper design. Hares and sparrows animate the pattern, and a rank bramble brings linear movement.
To create the pattern, I used a shaped piece of lino that tesselates using a half-drop repeat. The corn changes direction to give rhythm, and I play with tonal counterpoint, that, dark against light, and light against dark.

Painter/printmaker Mark Hearld designs a range of fabrics and wallpapers for St. Jude's - all produced in the UK.

Born in 1974, Mark studied illustration at Glasgow College of Art and then completed an MA in Natural History Illustration at the Royal College of Art.

Taking his inspiration from the flora and fauna of the British countryside, Mark works across a number of mediums, producing limited edition lithographic and linocut prints, unique paintings, collages and hand-painted ceramics. We share Mark’s admiration for artist/designers such as Bawden, Piper, Nash – artists well regarded for their forays into the world of commercial design.

In 2022, we published a book dedicated to Mark's work, Raucous Invention - The Joy of Making. Find out more over at our online gallery.
